What it is

Water is applied locally through compresses and packs or more broadly through soaks and hip baths. Temperature and exposure vary by method.

A compress or local pack keeps the application on one area; a soak or hip bath uses water more broadly. Contrast methods alternate warm and cool applications. The chosen method determines how much of the body is involved and how long each temperature is used.
